Difference Between Residential Facilities for Groups (RFG) and Assisted Living Facilities (ALF)

The primary difference between RFG and ALF are the amount of residents housed and the lifestyle provided. RFG can be licensed for 10 beds or less and ALF can be licensed for 11 bed or higher.

RFG

In Nevada, there are approximately 350 RFGs that serve 6,581 seniors, according to the Department of Health & Human Services Aging and Disability Services Division. All of these facilities must be licensed by the State Division of Public and Behavioral Health. RFGs can house residents who are on Hospice and/or receiving services provided by Home Health. However, Hospice and Home Health at RFGs are heavily regulated by specific medical conditions.

Most RFGs accept private pay, long-term care insurance, and veteran’s benefits. The program provides less restrictive alternatives to nursing home care for those aged 65 and older. Eligible individuals must be able to function in a group home setting where attendant care for toileting, feeding, oral care, dressing, and bathing is made available.

Features with RFG include:

• Alzheimer’s

• Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) to check blood sugar

• Mental illness

• Chronic illness

• Colostomy

ALF

ALFs typically provide a more luxurious lifestyle when compared to RFGs. Assistance ranges from basic to full care. This may include bathing, grooming, toileting, dressing, feeding, and medication management.

Both Options Include:

• Bathing

• Dressing and grooming

• Healthy meals and snacks

• Medication management

• Activities

• Incontinence care

• Assistance with ambulation

• Assisted dining

• Housekeeping

• Laundry

• 24/7 trained staff
